Don Flow
- How does your faith affects every aspect of your business? - work is a place that God has called you to
- prayer life - Trust that God is at work in every aspect of our day
- pray for specific people, broken relationships, wisdom, guidance
- “Not my will but yours be done”
- daily interactions as a leader - love should animate Christian leaders
- come alongside people, celebrate them, go the extra mile to help them
- be a person of truth, trust-worthy
- the leader is the constraint on the company for how far love will be expressed
- culture of the company - culture shapes the lives of all employees
- leader must make sure everything flows from Jesus’ admonition for neighborly love
- 3 foundational commitments - covenant with the customer (always truth, always right thing, always follow promise)
- community with one another – every persons’ contributions matter
- common good of the communities (arts, politics, environment)
- animates customers, employees, and community
- What does business look like in its fullest sense?
- re-awaken our imaginations
- “we are people of hope”
- this is a world of abundance and not scarcity
- “Jesus Christ did change everything”
- “the role of the church is to raise our vision back”
- seek truth, justice, and plenty wherever we are
- Metrics for measuring employees? SERVE
- Show respect – everyone matters
- Earn trust – be for each other
- Reach for perfection – don’t be satisfied with how things are – challenge without confidence creates fear, confidence without challenge creates complacency
- Value input – engage everyone in the process
- Energize others – a clear purpose brings energy
- “The world will not form distinctive Christians. It is the calling of the church to do that.” - The triune God is sending us out!
- the redemption of the world in Christ is happening now
Allen Catherine Kagina
- works for the Ugandan Revenue Authority (tax)
- much corruption in Africa
- Africa is the poorest continent in the world
- the URA was hated by the people and seen as a den of thieves
- Once you bring God into the marketplace things will change. God doesn’t know divisions between church, business, and government
- “You are an annointed tax collector”
- decided it was important to have 2 things: - integrity
- competence
- fired all people and required them to re-apply…this was the only way to deal with corruption
- asked taxpaper what they wanted from URA…we want to serve you
- re-branded - cut off the old image
- went into communities to serve
- “God has invaded the tax authority. Because he has, revenue has grown by 317%”
- “We are not a poor nation. We have capacity issues.”
- “We need to get people to do the right thing”
- many people are leaving the URA to lead large organizations
- “This is not about me. It was always God’s idea.”
- “If we will invite the kingdom of God into our public areas, God will take over and we will see better societies.”
Wilfredo De Jesus
- “Prayer is necessary…We cannot allow prayer to be a crutch not to do anything.”
- “You cannot let your budget dictate your faith”
- Ezekiel 22:30: stand in the gap (a place of weakness, vulnerability, danger) - the gaps are wide and destructive
- we must engage our community
- you have to see the community as your church
- sit with the lost, eat with the lost, converse with the lost, be with those who don’t look like us – GO TOWARD THEM
- “What’s sacred is the message and not the method”
- “We must not be afraid to take our faith into our communities.”
- Faith is the enemy of fear
- Nehemiah - “How’s Jerusalem?”
- “Leaders – If you’re not going to do anything with the answer, don’t ask the question”
- “With revelation comes responsibility”
- Nehemiah did 4 things: - he prayed “Prayer is good but needs to move us to action”
- he planned How many leaders have been in the huddle for 5 years instead of breaking and going into action? Get out of the huddle?
- he proceeded You must act to fill that gap to the glory of God
- he persuaded “The moment you decide to stand in the gap there will always be opposition.”
- “Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles; cowardice is submissive surrender to circumstances. courage breeds creativity…” – Martin Luther King Jr
Bill Hybels
- we are image bearers of God
- “There is a grander vision on planet earth with your name on it”
- when following our calling we will feel joy and purpose
- deep gladness meeting deep need
- Ephesians 2:10
- we are created for work
- “Are you living out the grander vision that God has custom designed for you?”
- Many are asking themselves, “Is this all there is? Will my life ever be used for a higher purpose?”
- Ephesians 2:10 “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God created beforehand…”
- “The satisfaction is never going to come through self-gratification. Find God’s bidding for your life and then serve people joyfully and indiscriminately and the satisfaction your heart longs for will follow that.”
- What would a satisfaction survey show in your life? - overflowing
- half in-sync and safety/satisfaction matters too much
- bankrupt “God loves you and doesn’t mean for your life to feel bankrupt” - John 10:10
- “God made you on purpose for a purpose”
- “When you get in-sync with your purpose you will feel it to your toes.”
- “You have to bring the kingdom of God outside the walls of your church”
- How do you get in-sync with God? - Put your hand in God’s hand
- Take a step of faith to confirm if you are going into the right direction (trial and error)
- The grander vision is unveiled as you go on the journey
- “God, if you exist, put something in my mind or heart that I know did not come from me” “O, God, speak to me” “What is my piece in His grander vision”-
