Don Flow

  • How does your faith affects every aspect of your business? - work is a place that God has called you to
  • prayer life - Trust that God is at work in every aspect of our day
  • pray for specific people, broken relationships, wisdom, guidance
  • “Not my will but yours be done”
  • daily interactions as a leader - love should animate Christian leaders
  • come alongside people, celebrate them, go the extra mile to help them
  • be a person of truth, trust-worthy
  • the leader is the constraint on the company for how far love will be expressed
  • culture of the company - culture shapes the lives of all employees
  • leader must make sure everything flows from Jesus’ admonition for neighborly love
  • 3 foundational commitments - covenant with the customer (always truth, always right thing, always follow promise)
  • community with one another – every persons’ contributions matter
  • common good of the communities (arts, politics, environment)
  • animates customers, employees, and community
  • What does business look like in its fullest sense?
  • re-awaken our imaginations
  • “we are people of hope”
  • this is a world of abundance and not scarcity
  • “Jesus Christ did change everything”
  • “the role of the church is to raise our vision back”
  • seek truth, justice, and plenty wherever we are
  • Metrics for measuring employees? SERVE
  • Show respect – everyone matters
  • Earn trust – be for each other
  • Reach for perfection – don’t be satisfied with how things are – challenge without confidence creates fear, confidence without challenge creates complacency
  • Value input – engage everyone in the process
  • Energize others – a clear purpose brings energy
  • “The world will not form distinctive Christians. It is the calling of the church to do that.” - The triune God is sending us out!
  • the redemption of the world in Christ is happening now

Allen Catherine Kagina

  • works for the Ugandan Revenue Authority (tax)
  • much corruption in Africa
  • Africa is the poorest continent in the world
  • the URA was hated by the people and seen as a den of thieves
  • Once you bring God into the marketplace things will change. God doesn’t know divisions between church, business, and government
  • “You are an annointed tax collector”
  • decided it was important to have 2 things: - integrity
  • competence
  • fired all people and required them to re-apply…this was the only way to deal with corruption
  • asked taxpaper what they wanted from URA…we want to serve you
  • re-branded - cut off the old image
  • went into communities to serve
  • “God has invaded the tax authority. Because he has, revenue has grown by 317%”
  • “We are not a poor nation. We have capacity issues.”
  • “We need to get people to do the right thing”
  • many people are leaving the URA to lead large organizations
  • “This is not about me. It was always God’s idea.”
  • “If we will invite the kingdom of God into our public areas, God will take over and we will see better societies.”

Wilfredo De Jesus

  • “Prayer is necessary…We cannot allow prayer to be a crutch not to do anything.”
  • “You cannot let your budget dictate your faith”
  • Ezekiel 22:30: stand in the gap (a place of weakness, vulnerability, danger) - the gaps are wide and destructive
  • we must engage our community
  • you have to see the community as your church
  • sit with the lost, eat with the lost, converse with the lost, be with those who don’t look like us – GO TOWARD THEM
  • “What’s sacred is the message and not the method”
  • “We must not be afraid to take our faith into our communities.”
  • Faith is the enemy of fear
  • Nehemiah - “How’s Jerusalem?”
  • “Leaders – If you’re not going to do anything with the answer, don’t ask the question”
  • “With revelation comes responsibility”
  • Nehemiah did 4 things: - he prayed “Prayer is good but needs to move us to action”
  • he planned How many leaders have been in the huddle for 5 years instead of breaking and going into action? Get out of the huddle?
  • he proceeded You must act to fill that gap to the glory of God
  • he persuaded “The moment you decide to stand in the gap there will always be opposition.”
  • “Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles; cowardice is submissive surrender to circumstances. courage breeds creativity…” – Martin Luther King Jr

Bill Hybels

  • we are image bearers of God
  • “There is a grander vision on planet earth with your name on it”
  • when following our calling we will feel joy and purpose
  • deep gladness meeting deep need
  • Ephesians 2:10
  • we are created for work
  • “Are you living out the grander vision that God has custom designed for you?”
  • Many are asking themselves, “Is this all there is? Will my life ever be used for a higher purpose?”
  • Ephesians 2:10 “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God created beforehand…”
  • “The satisfaction is never going to come through self-gratification. Find God’s bidding for your life and then serve people joyfully and indiscriminately and the satisfaction your heart longs for will follow that.”
  • What would a satisfaction survey show in your life? - overflowing
  • half in-sync and safety/satisfaction matters too much
  • bankrupt “God loves you and doesn’t mean for your life to feel bankrupt” - John 10:10
  • “God made you on purpose for a purpose”
  • “When you get in-sync with your purpose you will feel it to your toes.”
  • “You have to bring the kingdom of God outside the walls of your church”
  • How do you get in-sync with God? - Put your hand in God’s hand
  • Take a step of faith to confirm if you are going into the right direction (trial and error)
  • The grander vision is unveiled as you go on the journey
  • “God, if you exist, put something in my mind or heart that I know did not come from me” “O, God, speak to me” “What is my piece in His grander vision”-
